Title:  Storytelling using Machine Learning

Speaker:  Dr. Abhimanyu Gupta, St. Louis University

ABSTRACT:

There is a difference between information and knowledge. Knowledge is information that helps us act better. In our lives and businesses, we usually have access to a lot of information, but we sometimes struggle to convert it into knowledge. The discipline of data science guides us to convert past information into insights into the current world. This lecture aims to demonstrate how some machine learning concepts (e.g., decision trees) help us mine better stories from data. During the session, we will analyze a popular dataset (i.e., the Titanic dataset from Kaggle) to understand how the science of machine learning and artificial intelligence can join forces with the art of storytelling to help be a better problem solver.

BIO:

Abhimanyu Gupta is a data science and business analytics instructor at the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO. He has a Master of Statistics (M.Stat.) from the Indian Statistical Institute and a Ph.D. in Information Systems from Ghent University, Belgium. Abhi also mentors and supervises MBA students in their industry-focused practicum projects. Abhimanyu received the Emerson Excellence in Teaching award as an outstanding educator in the St. Louis region in 2021. He was also the Graduate Faculty of the Year in 2021 & 2022 and Beta Gamma Sigma Outstanding Teacher 2023 at the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business at Saint Louis University. Before coming to academia, Abhimanyu had 17 years of experience in the Information Technology industry and worked in the Quality Assurance division of Cognizant, Infosys, and TCS.
