Title: The Role of Context in Deep Learning for Applications in Smart Environments

Speaker:  Dr. Rashmi Dutta Baruah, IIT Guwahati

Smart environments, including smart industries, smart cities, smart buildings, and smart homes, are becoming a reality thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT). These settings frequently produce massive volumes of data. Such data can be used to develop predictive models for various applications and for providing automation at different levels. In an IoT-enabled smart environment, context is crucial because it enables more insightful analysis of the data that is gathered. Deep Learning techniques, namely Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), are capable of learning complex relations between input and output data. However, they are yet to be explored fully in the domains where the input-output relations are influenced by contexts. The talk will discuss various problems where context is relevant and present an approach to integrate available contexts with deep learning-based predictive models. It will further discuss its applications in the domain of smart environments.

Dr. Rashmi Dutta Baruah is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. She completed her Ph.D. from Lancaster University, United Kingdom. During her Ph.D. she was among the 10 international students who received Faculty of Science and Technology full studentship. From Nov. 2021 to Nov. 2023, she was a Marie Sklodowska Curie Research Fellow at Carlos III University of Madrid and for a short period at Robert Bosch Madrid, and Vienna University of Technology. Her interest lies in working in interdisciplinary areas where AI has potential applications.
